Senator John McCain did indeed earn "War Hero" status with his service in the United States Navy and being a surviving prisoner of war (POW).
Senator John McCain also pissed away every bit of honor he had ever earned with his (lack of) service in the United States Senate.
I respect Lieutenant. Commander McCain.
